The Fastest Growing StartUp
How a Group of "Old People" took over the Internet
The most desired. The target. Relevant. I have heard it ever since I actually was in the 18-34 demographic. First when I was in radio, then advertising, television, next in film marketing and now in the internet world. The importance of this key 18-34 year old group has always been touted to advertisers and therefore media.
They are the young, influential and easily influenced, with disposable income and a severe crisis of self esteem. The most important group. This has always been true. Until now. Why? Generation Boom. The most influential generation is at it again. More on that in a minute.
The young are idolized for spirit and vitality and now in the internet age as the supposed gatekeepers of all the good ideas. We have all heard of the 5 year olds with iPads, the high schoolers inventing phenomenal games and the college kids starting the "social network".
And now it seems that according to all of the media that unless you are 20 something, swilling cold brew coffee in your parents basement or ensconced in a Silicon valley, beach or alley startup incubator you are irrelevant in the digital marketplace of ideas. Older means hapless and mostly app-less.
Sidebar: If I hear one more of us saying "I can't work this, ask one of the teenagers" I'm going to.... C'mon it can't be that hard if a teenager can do it. They have the sticktoitness of a post it note on a Yorkie. You're just not trying. Take a minute, ask for help and jump in for gosh sakes!
Then there's the insulting, disparaging, and offensive proclamations that we are just not cool anymore. As in "Facebook is dead" now that old people have found it and are active users.
I'm here to say I don't buy it. Of course the thumb generation millennials had a bit of a head start. So did baseball. But I digress. First is just that. And we all know that first doesn't always last. Things have a way of shaking out over time. We know this because of our experience. Experience is the one thing that cannot be bought or learned. It must be lived.
Generation Boom. Are you experienced?
It was awfully clever of Hendrix to have the foresight that we would all need a rally cry a little later in life. An anthem that professes our greatest brand asset. Other than wisdom, money, connections, and self examination. :)
So here's the pitch...accompanied with some fun factoids.
We, Generation Boom are now going to create one of the fastest growing internet startups in history.
I don't believe we will ever wrest ultimate control because that lies in the paws and power of cats. But we could create much more than a little ripple.
Check it out:
There are 77 million boomers. We will make up 45% of the US population by 2015. Adults 50+ represent the web's largest constituency. We spend 27 hours per week online. 2 more hours than Millenials.
55+ group controls 3/4 of America's wealth.
Generation Boom outspends other generations by an estimated $400 billion per year.
18-34 indeed.
Irrelevant my bum.
We want to mobilize Generation Boom again. After all it's in our DNA to gather a following, take it to the streets, right some wrongs, and do it all with the best soundtrack ever! We have never listened to "them" and I'm pretty damn sure we aren't going to start now.
We would like to see how many "incapable and irrelevant old people" we can get to unite and join the cause.
Let's show the world the power of Generation Boom. Pass this on and get them to subscribe to the fastest growing startup...a community of the experienced.
We are Untired.
Mobilize. Generation Boom! Watch what happens.
